Mumbai Police To Summon Nupur Sharma Over Remarks On Prophet Muhammad

New Delhi: Mumbai Police will summon suspended BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma, who made controversial remarks on Prophet Mohammad on June 22.

''An FIR has been registered against Nupur Sharma in Pydhonie police station. We will call her to record her statement as per law and the legal procedure will be followed," the city police commissioner, Sanjay Pandey said while addressing a press conference on Monday.

According to reports, at least 2 FIRs have been registered against Nupur Sharma in Maharashtra, one at the behest of Islamic outfit Raza Academy, and another at Mumbra Police Station.

She has been charged under Indian Penal Code (IPC) sections 295A (deliberate and malicious acts intended to outrage religious feelings of any class by insulting its religion or religious beliefs), 153A (promoting enmity between groups) and 505(2) (statements conducing to public mischief).

Notably, there has been a lot of uproar over Nupur Sharma's comment as countries like Qatar, Kuwait, Iran and Pakistan have expressed their displeasure.

The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) has appealed to the United Nations and human rights organizations to take necessary steps against targeting Muslims in India. Reportedly, on behalf of the OIC, it was said that there has been an increase in violence against Muslims in India.

On the other hand, AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi demanding the arrest of Nupur Sharma said that only suspending her from BJP will not work.

After suspension, Nupur Sharma took to the micro-blogging site Twitter and said, ''I have been attending TV debates for the past many days where our Mahadev was being insulted and disrespected continuously. It was mockingly being said that it is not Shivling but a fountain. The Shivling was also being ridiculed by comparing it to roadside signs and poles in Delhi.

I could not tolerate this continuous insult and disrespect towards our Mahadev and I said some things in response to it. If my words have caused discomfort or hurt the religious feelings of anyone whatsoever, I hereby unconditionally withdraw my statement. It was never my intention to hurt anyone's religious feelings''.

During a debate on a TV news channel, BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma had allegedly made derogatory remarks against Prophet Muhammad, which triggered an uproar.
