Narendra Modi Pays Tribute to Ex-PM Rajiv Gandhi On His Death Anniversary

Guwahati: Prime Minister Narendra Modi today paid tribute to the Late Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi on his death anniversary.

Narendra Modi tweeted, “Tributes to former PM Shri Rajiv Gandhi on his death anniversary.

Chairperson of United Progressive Alliance (UPA) Sonia Gandhi, Congress President Rahul Gandhi and party general secretary for east Uttar Pradesh Priyanka Gandhi paid floral tribute to late Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi on his death anniversary at Veer Bhumi on Tuesday morning. During the tribute ceremony, Priyanka Gandhi’s husband Robert Vadra was also present with the Gandhi family to paid homage to his father-in-law.

Rajiv Gandhi had earlier represented Amethi Lok Sabha seat in Uttar Pradesh for four times. Born on August 20, 1944, he served as the sixth Prime Minister of India from 1984 to 1989 and took office after the assassination of his mother, the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in 1984.

Late Prime Minister Gandhi was assassinated by a Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) suicide bomber during an election rally in Tamil Nadu’s Sriperumbudur on May 21, 1991 and was cremated at Veer Bhumi, located on the banks of the River Yamuna.

The other leaders who paid homage to Rajiv Gandhi are Overseas Congress Chief Sam Pitroda, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee among others.

Sam Pitroda paid his respects to Rajiv Gandhi in a series of tweets saying, “Today is the day to pay respect to this great leader who dreamed of India in the 21st century and at the same time reflect on his contribution to India.” In another tweet he said, “Rajiv Gandhi’s life was taken away at an early age by a terror attack. His loss left a huge vacuum in politics, leadership and development in India.”

Tweeting on Late Prime Minister, Gandhi’s anniversary, Rahul Gandhi said, “My father was gentle, loving, kind and affectionate. He taught me to love and respect all beings. He taught us to never hate and to forgive. I miss him. On his death anniversary, I remember my father with love and gratitude.”
