National Mathematics Day 2021: 134th Birth Anniversary of Srinivasa Ramanujan

National Mathematics Day is observed every year across the country on 22 December remembering and honouring the mathematical genius named Srinivasa Ramanujan. This year the National Mathematics Day falls on Wednesday 22 December.

The International Day of Mathematics is celebrated on 14 March every year.

The remarkable mathematician of the 20th century, Srinivasa Ramanujan is known for his outstanding contribution in number theory, mathematical analysis, continued fraction and infinite series. Among all these in the case of the analytical theory of numbers, infinite series and elliptic functions, Ramajan had immense control and was much recognized for his huge contribution in these sectors.

This year with the 134th birth anniversary of Dr. Ramanujan the country is celebrating the 10th occasion of the day of mathematical significance, National Mathematics Day.

The birth anniversary of Srinivasa Ramanujan was marked to be celebrated as National Mathematics Day in the year 2012 on the 125th birth anniversary of Dr. Ramanujan when it was announced by Dr. Manmohan Singh who was the Prime Minister of India at that time.

Dr. Ramanujan was born on 22 December 1887 in a Tamil Brahmin Lyengar family living in Erode area of Tamil Nadu. The renowned mathematician died on 26 April 1920 in Kumbakonam, Tamil Nadu.

Ramanujan was a self-trained mathematician as he started dealing with maths at a very young age when he was just 12 years old. He used to bring out solutions of trigonometry at 12 and at the age of 13 he developed theorems of his own without taking help from anyone.

Ramanujan had completed his studies in 1903 at the Government College of Kumbakonam. While he was pursuing his college education he used to fail several times for his lack of interest and knowledge in other subjects apart from Mathematics.

In the year 1912, Ramanujan was employed at the Madras Port Trust where his co-workers referred him to the professor of Trinity College, Cambridge University after getting aware of his extreme knowledge of mathematics.

Ramanujan then became the first-ever Indian to be elected a Fellow of Trinity College, Cambridge University and he was the youngest member of Britain's Royal Society.

Ramanujan had complied more than 3,900 theorems results according to the government data. Academicians from all over the world agreed that the theory by Ramanujan transformed the mathematics of the 20th century. Ramanujan's biography was depicted in the 2015 movie named 'The Man Who Knew Infinity' which shows his journey of gaining recognition as a mathematician.
