NCRB data: Counterfeit Rs 2000 notes make maximum share of seized fake currency notes

NEW DELHI: According to the latest NCRB report titled 'Crime in India' counterfeit currency notes worth Rs 46.06 crore were seized between 2017 and 2018. Out of the seized chunk, 56.31 percent was in the form of fake Rs 2,000 notes.

It has been noticed that Rs 2000 notes continue to form a major chunk of fake currency notes.

According to reports, most of the fake currency notes have been seized from the state of Gujarat.

In 2018, 34,680 fake notes of Rs 2,000 denomination, worth Rs 6.93 crore were seized from the state.

According to a report published by the intelligence agencies, cybercrime has witnessed a sharp 50 percent increase since demonetization was imposed in Gujarat along with the rest of the country in 2016.

Since 2009, the city Cyber cell used to receive about 1,500 applications of Cyber-related incidents every year. In 2016, the counts were shot up to about 3,000—having the majority of applications coming after demonetization in November 2016, as there was a ‘flood’ of digital transactions, said an unnamed Cyber cell official. In 2017, the cell received about 4,000 complaints.

The government has been facing repeated attacks from the opposition over demonetization. Many parties have blamed demonetization as one of the main reasons for the economic slowdown.

The BJP government had maintained that the reform was carried out with an aim to tackle black money and corruption.
