New Delhi: UGC to Revise UGC-NET Syllabus; Expert Panel Formed for Comprehensive Update

NEW DELHI: In a recent announcement, Jagadesh Kumar, the Chairman of the University Grants Commission (UGC), revealed plans to revamp the syllabus for the National Eligibility Test (NET). This revision comes as a response to the evolving landscape of higher education and the need to align with the principles laid out in the National Education Policy (NEP) of 2020.

The National Testing Agency (NTA), responsible for conducting the UGC-National Eligibility Test (UGC-NET) twice a year, is set to implement these changes. The UGC-NET serves as the gateway for the Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) and qualifies individuals for assistant professor appointments in subjects such as Humanities and Social Sciences, Indian and foreign languages, and certain science disciplines.

Typically held in June and December across 83 subjects, the UGC-NET syllabus has not undergone a comprehensive update since the initiation of the process in 2017. However, in light of the educational developments spurred by the NEP 2020, the UGC has deemed it necessary to revisit and revise the existing syllabi.

Chairman Jagadesh Kumar emphasized that the higher education sector has witnessed notable advancements, emphasizing the importance of imparting multidisciplinary curricula and holistic education. In a recent commission meeting, it was unanimously decided to initiate the process of updating the syllabi for UGC-NET subjects.

To facilitate this comprehensive revision, the UGC will establish an expert committee comprising seasoned professionals from relevant fields. This committee will play a pivotal role in aligning the syllabus with contemporary educational paradigms, ensuring it reflects the multidisciplinary approach advocated by the NEP 2020.

The timeline for the introduction of the updated syllabus was also addressed by Kumar. Candidates can expect to receive ample notice before the new syllabus is implemented in UGC-NET, allowing for a smooth transition and preparation for those aspiring to undertake the exam. The upcoming UGC NET 2023, scheduled to be conducted by the NTA from December 6 to 22, will likely be the first instance where these revised syllabi will come into effect, marking a significant milestone in the evolution of the UGC-NET examination process.
