New Delhi: In a peculiar incident, the driver and owner were charged for permitting the bride and groom to travel in an emergency ambulance.

After a video went viral of the same, the owner has been served with a notice, and the driver's licence will be suspended. Apart from these, the vehicle was taken into custody by the Motor Vehicles Department (MVD) on Tuesday.

A decorated ambulance drove the newlywed couple home from the wedding location in Kattanam, Alappuzha, with beacon lights, sirens, and loud music.

Commenting on the same, Regional Transport Officer Saji Prasad G.S said that the ambulance had been misused and the agency has sent letters to the driver and owner.

According to reports, the incident occurred on January 9. The bridegroom, who is also an ambulance driver, borrowed the car for the special occasion.

Earlier, the Ambulance Drivers Union lodged a complaint after the video surfaced on social media. The vehicle was seized based on the directive of Transport Commissioner M.R. Ajith Kumar.

The Ambulance Owners Association (AOA) has filed a complaint against the act as well. The pair can be seen being carried in an ambulance with the siren on in the footage. Meanwhile, the health and transportation ministers have been informed about the situation.

The vehicle's driver, on the other hand, disputed the charges. He claimed that he only drove with the bride and groom in the front seat. According to him, the siren was never activated.

The groom works at a private hospital in Kattanam as a staff member.

In a similar incident, last year, In Uttar Pradesh, a family of nine, including a newlywed couple, hired an ambulance to go from Ghaziabad to Muzaffarnagar, which is around 80 kilometres distant, during a lockdown. They travelled between Ghaziabad and Muzaffarnagar's Khatauli in a medical emergency van masquerading as patients.

According to cops, the groom, bride, and their seven family members have been confined at their house in Khatauli.

The ambulance driver, who reportedly brought the couple on Wednesday has been charged, according to the police.
