PATNA : Nitish Kumar, the Chief Minister of Bihar, announced that the government should conduct a caste-based survey which will help in the uplift of deprived classes in the society.

He expressed utter disappointment regarding the petition filed in the Supreme Court against the Bihar administration's decision to conduct a caste-based survey.

Nitish Kumar said that, he was surprised with the plea in the apex body as according to him the survey will only help the unprivileged section of the state. He stated this on Wednesday, and emphasised that this particular survey will differ from the census which is led by the Centre.

The survey will give an insight to the economic status of people along with assessment about the precise number of migrant individuals residing outside the state.

It will help in a better understanding of measures that need to be taken for the deprived sections, added the chief minister. Nitish Kumar further mentioned while addressing the Samadhan Yatra in Madhuban, that earlier Bihar conducted a headcount 'ganana' and not census 'janganana'.

The Supreme Court on Thursday, declared to hear the 20th January plea, against the Bihar administration decision to carry on a census based on caste in the state. The petition claims that the survey was purely irrelevant and unconstitutional.

The chief minister further announced the newly established Mithila Haat, at Araria Sangram village. He expressed his gratitude towards the water resources minister, Sanjay Kumar Jha for his attempts in releasing the project.

It is constructed along the National Highway (NH-57) and will facilitate in showcasing the local art and traditions. The Haat will present locally made crafts and cuisines and several other stuff to its visitors.
