NEW DELHI: The Ministry of Education in a recent statement has announced that the schools and hostel funded under the Samagra Shiksha Scheme will be renamed after Subhas Chandra Bose.

As per the statement, the schools and hostels under the Ministry of Education (MoEs) Samagra Shiksha Scheme will now be known Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose residential schools and hostels.

The decision has been taken as an attempt to inspire the children and to motivate the teachers, staff and administration and to enable them to achieve high standards of excellence.

A total of 1,063 residential facilities including 383 residential schools and 680 hostels located in different states and Union Territories under the SSA have been sanctioned by the Ministry of Education.

Preference is given to educationally backward blocks (EBBS), left-wing extremism (LWE) affected districts, special focus districts (SFD) and the aspirational districts identified by NITI Aayog, it said.

Under the SSA Scheme schools are provided with financial assistance for opening and running of residential schools and hostels in remote areas including hilly, tribal or sparsely populated areas.

The objective of the scheme is to ensure education is made accessible to all including the opening of schools where it may not be viable or in the urban areas who are in need of care and protection.

According to the statement of MoE, residential facilities are made available to the most vulnerable section that may include child labour rescued, migrant children who belong to poor landless families, children without adult protection, separated from their families, internally displaced persons, and children from the areas of social and armed conflict and natural calamities

Apart from following the regular school curriculum, these schools provide facilities for the all-round development of the children, by including various extra-curricular activities.
