Geologists have found fossilised leaves of the Jurassic period in Jharkhand's Sahibganj district on Saturday. According to Ranjit Kumar Singh, Assistant professor, Sahibganj PG College, a couple of 20 cm by 5 cm fossilised leaves found in Dukhol mountain in Taljhari area is estimated around 150-200 million years old.

'These leaves were consumed by the herbivorous dinosaurs. The smaller fossils from the upper Jurassic to Cretaceous period were earlier found in the region and if we are lucky we might end up finding fossilised dinosaur eggs during further excavation,'' said Singh.

The excavation is being conducted in association with the National Botanical Research Institute, Lucknow under a project of the Department of Science and Technology of the Union Government.

Earlier, several fossils were found in the neighbouring Pakur district. Singh and his team have been working in the region for the past 12 years but have never found such prominent fossils before. Singh is hopeful that there are chances of finding more fossils in this region.
