Panjab University to Confer Honorary Degree ‘Doctor of Laws’ to Ex-CJI Ranjan Gogoi

NEW DELHI: On the occasion of Panjab University's 70th Annual Convocation on May 20th, the university will confer Honorary Degrees on prominent Indian personalities. According to the report, Panjab University, Chandigarh has decided to grant former CJI Ranjan Gogoi an Honorary degree of 'Doctor of Laws' (Honoris Causa) based on the recommendations of a committee comprised of Vice Chancellors and Chancellors of various Universities.

At the convocation, Vice-President of India Jagdeep Dhankhar will bestow the honorary 'Doctor of Laws' (Honoris Causa) to Ranjan Gogoi for his important contributions to society.

Following are the honorary degree to be conferred to these prominent personalities of the country:

1. Honorary degree of Doctor of Science (D.Sc.) (honoris causa) to Dr. Gagandeep Kang, FRS.

2. Honorary degree of Doctor of Laws (honoris causa) to Sumitra Mahajan, Ex-Lok Sabha Speaker

3. Honorary degree of Doctor of Literature (D.Lit.) (honoris causa) to Dr. Sudha N. Murti (Educator, Author and Philanthropist and Chairperson of the Infosys Foundation)

4. Honorary degree of Doctor of Laws (honoris causa) to Hon'ble Justice Ranjan Gogoi, Former Chief Justice of India, Member of Parliament (Rajya Sabha).

Panjab University Ratna Awards to be conferred to:

1. Dr. Rattan Singh Jaggi (Gyan Ratna)

2. Dr. Veena Tandon (Vigyan Ratna)

3. Sh. Neeraj Chopra (Khel Ratna)

4. Dr. Irshad Kamil (Sahitya Ratna)

5. Rakesh Bharti Mittal (Udyog Ratna)

6. Ayushmann Khurana (Kala Ratna)

On the other hand, Assam Public Works President Abhijeet Sharma recently filed a Rs. 1 Crore defamation lawsuit against former Chief Justice of India Gogoi, accusing him of making false statements in his autobiography "Justice for the Judge."

After being elected as a Rajya Sabha member by then-President Ram Nath Kovind, Ranjan Gogoi announced that he will donate his entire salary and allowance to fund the education of law students in the country.
