NEW DELHI: In a noteworthy achievement, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his appreciation for the milestone achievement of over 50 crore Jan Dhan accounts during Saturday morning. This significant accomplishment was accompanied by his commendation of the fact that more than half of these accounts are held by women. The event, which marks a triumph in the government's efforts towards financial inclusion, was announced by the Union Finance Ministry on the preceding Friday. The accounts have become a key instrument in driving economic accessibility and empowerment across the nation.
Of these Jan Dhan accounts, an impressive 56 percent are under the ownership of women, showcasing the expanding influence of "Nari Shakti" or women's power. The accounts, initiated by the Modi government's extensive nationwide initiative in 2014, are designed to facilitate access to various financial services, including direct benefit transfers, especially for the economically disadvantaged. This groundbreaking accomplishment aligns seamlessly with the government's commitment to bolster financial inclusivity and uplift vulnerable sections of society.
A striking 67 percent of the Jan Dhan accounts have been established in rural and semi-urban areas, amplifying the message of financial empowerment to every corner of the nation. The Prime Minister noted that this statistic underscores the administration's dedication to ensuring the benefits of financial inclusion permeate every stratum of society. Through this initiative, the government has made significant strides in bridging the economic gap between urban and rural regions, bringing previously underserved areas into the financial mainstream.
The total deposits in these Jan Dhan accounts have now surged past a remarkable Rs 2.03 lakh crore. Moreover, an impressive count of around 34 crore RuPay cards have been distributed in conjunction with these accounts, and notably, at no cost. This move has further facilitated convenient and efficient transactions for account holders, promoting a cashless economy and reducing financial barriers.
Prime Minister Modi's appreciation for this achievement underscores the monumental shift in financial accessibility that India has witnessed. The Jan Dhan accounts have not only propelled economic empowerment but have also laid the foundation for seamless government-to-citizen transactions. This accomplishment is a testament to the government's dedication to ensuring the welfare of every citizen and fostering a more inclusive and prosperous India.
