President Kovind Appoints Justice SA Bobde as Next Chief Justice of India

President Ram Nath Kovind signed a warrant appointing Justice Sharad Arvind Bobde as the next Chief Justice of India (CJI) on Tuesday, October 29th, 2019. The swearing-in ceremony of the 47th CJI is to be held on November 18th, 2019. His term will run until 23rd April 2021.

Justice Bobde born on 24th April 1956 comes from a Nagpur-based lawyers’ family. Arvind Bobde- father of Sharad Bobde was an advocate general of Maharashtra in 1980 and 1985 and his grandfather was a lawyer too.

Justice CJI Ranjan Gogoi will be retired on 17th November 2019 who was sworn in as CJI on 3rd October 2018. CJI Justice Ranjan Gogoi has formally recommended Justice Bobde to be his successor on 18th October 2019.

Justice Bobde became a Senior Advocate in 1998 and was appointed as an additional judge of Bombay High Court on 29th March 2000. He joined as Chief Justice of Madhya Pradesh High Court in 2012 and was elevated as a judge of the Supreme Court of India in 2013.

Meanwhile, he has been involved in top cases like the Supreme Court, including the Ayodhya temple-mosque dispute, Aadhaar, petitions against firecrackers and so on.

Bobde is the second senior-most judge in the Supreme Court to take up the judiciary’s top position.

As per reports, a formal notification is expected shortly after Warrant of Appointment has been signed by President. Tenure of 17 months and would demit office on 23rd April 2021.
