Rashtrapati Bhavan's Mughal Garden Renamed to Amrit Udyan

NEW DELHI: The President of India announced the renaming of one of the most beautiful and iconic parks in the country on Saturday. The popular Mughal Garden will be known as the Amit Udyan from now on.

The new name has been chosen while keeping in mind the theme of celebration for the 75 years of India's independence, the Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav.

The deputy press secretary to the President of India Droupadi Murmu, Navika Gupta, said, "On the occasion of the celebrations of 75 years of Independence as 'Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav', the President of India has given a common name to the Rashtrapati Bhavan gardens as Amrit Udyan."

The Amrit Udayan will be ceremoniously inaugurated by Indian President Droupadi Murmu on Sunday, January 29. The park will remain open to the general public for almost two months from January 31 to March 26. The Mughal Garden consists of several parts out of which the visitors are allowed access to the Rectangular Garden, the Long and the Circular Garden, the Herbal Garden, the Musical Garden and the Spiritual Garden.

Previously the park was accessible to the public only for about a month in February- March every year when the flowers of the garden are in full bloom. The deputy press secretary to the President of India also mentioned that apart from this two-month window, the office of the President is planning to keep the garden open for viewing by special groups of people. These groups can consist of farmers as well as differently-abled citizens of the country.

The designs for this garden were created as early as 1916 but the plantation took almost a decade to complete. It has thousands of varieties of flowers alone and receives lakhs of visitors in the one usual month duration of its opening.
