Delhi: A special meeting of the New Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC) was held on Wednesday. The meeting approved the proposal to change the name of Delhi's Rajpath to 'Kartavya Path'.

Meenakshi Lekhi, the Union Minister of State for External Affairs and Culture, who presided over the meeting confirmed the approval of the proposal, which she says was done during the meeting. She is also a member of the NDMC.

Lekhi asserted that they approved the proposal which requested the renaming of Rajpath as Kartavya Path in the special council meeting today.

Satish Upadhyay, Vice Chairman of the NDMC mentioned that the ministry of housing and urban affairs raised the proposal. He expressed that the complete stretch and the area covered from the Netaji statue at India Gate up to the Rashtrapati Bhawan would be dubbed as 'Kartavya Path'.

However, the meeting saw the absence of Arvind Kejriwal, the Chief Minister of Delhi. Kejriwal is another member of the NDMC. After the meeting was wrapped up, the civic body rolled out the resolution which was passed during the meeting to assign a new name to Rajpath. The resolution stated, "NDMC council has resolved the renaming of Rajpath and Central Vista Lawns as Kartavya Path in a special meeting held at Council Room Palika Kendra, New Delhi today (Wednesday)."

In regards to the decision made by the council, the resolution also mentioned that the concerned authority might initiate necessary actions in the future, which may include changing names on boards and signages.

Notably, the name of Rajpath during British Rule was Kingsway. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during his Independence Day speech this year emphasized scrapping off symbols, which align with the colonial mindset.
