Sand Artist Gives Impactful Message on World Environment Day

NEW DELHI: Sudarsan Pattnaik, a well-known sand artist, tweeted a picture of an artwork he created on the Puri beach in Odisha on Monday in honour of World Environment Day in order to spread the word about limiting the usage of plastic. At Puri beach in Odisha he used 2,320 plastic bottles to construct a magnificent turtle sculpture as part of the global initiative. His artwork not only demonstrates his artistic talent, but it also conveys a strong message about the need to stop plastic pollution.

The 5th of June is recognised as World Environment Day, a day to raise awareness of everyone's shared need to preserve and maintain the environment. One of the worst contaminants, both on land and at sea, is plastic, according to research.

With this year's World Environment Day topic being "Beat Plastic Pollution," Sudarsan Pattnaik was inspired to build this sculpture. The enormous turtle sculpture acts as a potent reminder to people to make little but significant adjustments in their everyday routines to reduce their use of plastic and help create a cleaner, healthier world.

His fans and other Twitter users praised the artist's work and his efforts to spread environmental awareness.

Justice Arun Mishra, the chair of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), added that the urgent need to address plastic's negative impacts on the environment is highlighted by this year's topic. Plastic, he said, has become a severe threat to environmental contamination.

"This year's theme very aptly underlines the urgent need to combat the detrimental effects of plastic on our planet and promote alternative eco-friendly usable replacing single-use plastic material, which is necessary to preserve human life and protect rights. In this regard, rigorous policy decisions to check the spread of plastic and other such pollutants which endanger our environment and climate are required," he said.

In order to highlight their leadership in the fight against plastic waste, Ivory Coast and the Netherlands are teaming up to host World Environment Day in 2023. The Ivory Coast banned plastic bags in 2014 and promoted reusable packaging. The city of Abidjan has since developed into a centre for eco-aware entrepreneurs, highlighting the country's dedication to sustainability.
