The Supreme Court on Thursday said that airlines will have to refund the full amount for air tickets canceled due to lockdown. The airlines cannot levy any cancellation charges.

The apex court also allowed airline companies to set up 'credit shells' with life up to March 31, 2021 to refund all the passengers.

The passengers will get a complete refund if the money remained unused on the cut-off date.

A three-judge Bench, headed by Justice Ashok Bhushan said tickets booked through travel agents will be refunded through travel agents.

The Apex court has accepted all the suggestions which were put forth by the Director General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) regarding the refund of tickets for flights canceled due to the pandemic.

Earlier, the DGCA had proposed the credit shell facility instead of an immediate refund considering the financial distress of some airlines amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

The refund is applicable on both domestic and international flights originating in India booked during the nationwide lockdown.
