Sports Ministry announces Rs 5 lakh for the family of deceased Indian footballer Manitombi Singh

New Delhi: Union Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju on Friday said that the ministry has sanctioned a sum of Rs 5 lakh for the family of deceased Indian footballer Manitombi Singh to try ease their financial distress.

The former India player Laishram Manitombi Singh, died on Aug 9, in Imphal at the age of 39. Manitombi was the only earning member of his family.

Speaking about the decision, Sports Minister Rijiju said, "extending support to those who are athletes, past and present, as well as those who have dedicated their lives to the sports as coaches, sports administrators, support staff, and in similar roles is a duty upon us."

"It is of prime importance for the government to support all our athletes, past and present, as well as those who have dedicated their lives to the sport as coaches, sports administrators, support staff, and in similar roles."
