New Delhi: The current Director General of CISF, Subodh Kumar Jaiswal is India's new Chief of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). The government, in a late Tuesday night notification, made the announcement.

A 1985 batch Maharashtra cadre IPS officer, Jaiswal has been appointed as CBI Director for a term of two years.

"The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has, based on the panel recommended by the committee constituted as per Section 4A(1) of the Delhi Special Police Establishment Act, 1946, approved the appointment of Subodh Kumar Jaiswal, IPS (Mh-1985) as Director, Central Bureau of Investigation for a period of two years from the date of assumption of charge of the office," the government notification said.

Jaiswal was appointed as the DG of Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) in January this year. Prior to this, Jaiswal was the Mumbai Police Commissioner (June 2018 to February 2019) and went on to become the Maharashtra Director General of Police before being called on central deputation again.

Jaiswal also had long stints in the Intelligence Bureau and the Research and Analysis Wing (RAW). He was with the RAW for almost a decade.

Among the several high-profile cases handled by Jaiswal in his various capacities, interesting ones include the Telgi stamp paper scam case probe before it was taken over by the CBI. He then headed the State Reserve Police Force, following which he joined the Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad.

Jaiswal was picked from among three officials shortlisted by Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led high-level selection committee. The selection panel consisted of Chief Justice of India M V Ramana and Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha Adhir Ranjan Choudhury a Congress MP from West Bengal.

There were two other officers in the race for the post of DG CBI - National Investigation Agency (NIA) chief YC Modi and Border Security Force (BSF) director general Rakesh Asthana. Both are 1984-batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officers. But they were out of the race after Chief Justice Ramana cited past judgments of the Supreme Court that an official left with less than six months for retirement cannot become a police chief. Modi retires on May 31, while Asthana's tenure ends in August. Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) chief SS Deswal, too could not be considered for the CBI top job because of this six-month criterion.
