CHENNAI : On Sunday, more than 300 bulls were released into sports field of Tamil Nadu following the mega sporting event, Jallikattu. The huge celebration began in Gandarvakottai taluk's Thatchankurichi in Pudukkottai district.
Jallikattu was scheduled on 6th of January, however, got postponed due to safety conditions issued by Pudukkottai district administration. The event witnessed more than 350 bull tamers who participated in the bull-taming sport to showcase their bravery by taming the bulls.
Several young men with high enthusiasm were given entry one after the other. Simultaneously, the bulls were also released one after the each.
The inauguration of the mega event was done by Siva V Meyyanathan, state minister for Environment and Climate Change along with S Regupathy, the minister for law.
Unfortunately, more than 35 people, which included both watchers and contestants received injury during the event. As per the reports, few police officials also got wounded. Few injured ones had to be admitted in a hospital.
The prizes for winners included a two wheeler bike, pressure cooker and cots. The sports event was initiated after a refined supervision by the concerned authorities. Recently, Tamil Nadu administration has issued several guidelines regarding Jallikattu.
Apart from Pudukottai, the event is conducted in several other district such as Madurai, Thanjavur and Tiruchirapalli. The administration advised all the bull tamers along with the spectators to submit their respective Covid-19 vaccine certificates before taking part in Jallikattu.
Jallikattu is a traditional event in which huge number of bulls are released in the crowd and participants have to grab the bull's hump while the bull tries to escape.
Contenders try to remove the flags from bull's horn and it is a time based event. Whoever manages to grab maximum number of flags and hold the bull for longer period of time, wins. It is celebrated every year in Tamil Nadu as a part of Pongal celebrations.
