Tamil Nadu Rains Updates: Death Toll Rises to 14, Severe Rainfall Predicted

CHENNAI: On Thursday, 11 November the Indian Meteorological Department, IMD came up with the prediction of thunderstorms with heavy to very heavy rainfall in the remote places over some districts of Tamil Nadu.

In a statement, the IMD department said that moderate rain is also predicted within the next three hours in the isolated regions over some districts of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry such as Thiruvannamalai, Ranipet, Cuddalore, Villupuram, Kanyakumari, Thenkasi Kallakurichi, Vellore, and Thirunelveli.

Till now, 14 people have lost their lives in the state due to heavy rains, said Kumar Jayanth, Principal Secretary, Revenue Department, Tamil Nadu.

On Thursday morning 20 flights from Chennai airport were delayed including 10 arrivals and 10 departures due to heavy rainfall in the state apart from these four flights are diverted towards Hyderabad and Bengaluru. One flight each from Kolkata and Mumbai was diverted to Hyderabad while one from Delhi and another from Trichy were diverted to Bengaluru. Some of the departures from the Chennai airport were delayed as postponed by the authorities to depart later in the day.

Some of the regions in Madipakkam and Puzhuthivakkam experienced heavy floods leading to jams in roads filled with water. People living in the neighbourhood areas of Puzhuthivakkam and the suburban of Madipakkam woke up on Thursday with streets flooded. The rain has led to huge destruction of roads and damages of houses as water entered into the ground floor of many houses. The low-lying areas and interior are much affected by the heavy rain and the main roads are not completely flooded.

The movement of vehicles was stopped on the main roads of Puzhuthivakkam for a small stretch close to the Corporation Zone 14 office because of the water level rising above three feet. In the Kodambakkam area of Chennai tree-clearing operations are held in roads as rainwater spreads over the city. Fire station officer of Chennai, Senthil Rajkumar stated that around 150 personnel came to Chennai for rescue operations and teams came from Ramanathapuram, Pudukkottai, Thanjavur, and Salem in South Chennai.
