TMC's Sushmita Dev Files Nomination For By-poll To West Bengal Rajya Sabha Seat

Sushmita on her Twitter wrote that she filed her nomination at the Bidhan Sabha, Kolkata for the by-election.

"Filed my nominations at the Bidhan Sabha, Kolkatta for Rajya Sabha by-election. I thank the senior leaders of @AITCofficial who remained present with me & all the Members of the Legislative Assembly who proposed my name. Heading to Tripura tomorrow", Sushmita said.

The opposition party in West Bengal, BJP however said that they will not file any nomination for the poll.

Suvendu Adhikari, leader of the opposition said, "BJP will not nominate any candidate for Rajyasabha by-poll due in West Bengal. Outcome is predetermined. Our focus is to make sure unelected CM to be unelected once again. Jai Ma Kali".

The Election Commission of India (ECI) has decided to hold six bye-elections in six states including in Assam. These by-polls would be held in Rajya Sabha seats that fell vacant due to various reasons. According to press not of ECI, poll would be held in two seats in Tamil Nadu and one each in West Bengal, Assam, Maharashtra, Puducherry and Madhya Pradesh. The polls to all these seven seats will take place on October 4, the EC said.

In Assam, the Rajya Sabha seat fell vacant after speaker Biswajit Daimary resigned from the membership of the upper house of Parliament. Sources said that the BJP is likely to field Union minister and former CM Sarbananda Sonowal from the Assam seat as he is yet to become a MP. The press release by the Election Commission revealed that the issue of notification will be on September 15, 2021, while the last date till candidates can file their nominations is September 22.
