Unrest in Delhi after LSR student commits suicide

New Delhi: Students and women activists staged protests in Delhi seeking justice for Aiswarya Reddy on Monday.

Aishwarya Reddy, a student of Lady Shree Ram, succumbed to taking her own life on 3rd November after failing to receive an instalment for her scholarship that was due in March.

Reddy's father, the resident of Rangareddy district of Telangana, said she was an IAS aspirant, but her family failed to buy her a second-hand laptop to pursue online classes during the pandemic lockdown.

She was the state class 12 topper and had mortgaged her house to fund for her higher studies. She mentioned in her suicide note, written in Telugu, that she did not wish to burden her family any more with her education necessities.

Local police reported, Aishwarya, a student of Bsc Mathematics (Honours) student hung herself in her home in Shadnagar.

While members of the Congress-affiliated National Students' Union of India (NSUI) protested outside the residence of Union Education Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal, 'Nishank', the left-affiliated All India Students' Association (AISA) staged an agitation outside Delhi University's Arts Faculty.

NSUI national secretary Lokesh Chugh said that Aishwarya was denied scholarship for over a year by the government. She had written to the administration several times but in vain. The further delay put Aishwarya under mental pressure and she decided to take her life.

However, the principal of LSR, Suman Sharma, denied claims of Aishwarya reaching out to college authorities.

The student union representative Unnimaya said Aishwarya was residing in college hostel which was converted to 1st-year hostel, hence, she had to vacate. Her parents had to arrange Rs 30,000 to get her tickets booked back from Delhi. Her younger sister was made to drop out of school to help arrange for the amount.

Aishwarya was also a recipient of the Ministry of Science and Technology's INSPIRE scholarship which funds for a year.
