UP gangster Vikas Dubey arrested in Madhya Pradesh after 5-day run

Guwahati: Vikas Dubey, the Uttar Pradesh gangster accused of massacring 8 men in uniform last week, was finally tracked down from a temple in Madhya Pradesh after a week-long chase. Dubey's arrest in Ujjain came moments after 2 of his close aides were shot down in separate encounters by police.

Now, CCTV footage shows the notorious gangster, hands cuffed, being taken away by policemen. According to officials, the gangster was spotted at the Mahakal temple in Ujjain at around 8 am in the morning. He was reportedly buying offerings for the temple deity when a shopkeeper recognized him and informed police. Dubey was detained by guards upon emerging from the temple.

Dubey produced an ID card, but the guards refused to buy it - claiming that it was of a much younger man. Dubey then attacked the guards, who overpowered him and took him to the police station. He admitted that he is indeed Vikas Dubey -- the notorious gangster whose face has been plastered all over media since the gruesome killing of the cops.

Narottam Mishra, Madhya Pradesh Minister, said that gangster's arrest is a big victory for the police and termed him as a "cruel killer." The Chief Minister further stated that the Uttar Pradesh has been alerted about the development.

It needs mention here that eight policemen were killed on Friday when they went in a large team to Bikru village in Chaubeypur area of Kanpur to arrest Vikas Dubey, charged in 60 criminal cases including murder, kidnapping, extortion, and rioting. According to reports, Dubey was informed by local police, and lay an ambush on the cops. Dubey and his men fired upon the police with assault rifles from rooftops, killing 8 of them.

A massive hunt was launched and the bounty on him was raised to Rs 5 lakh. The police inspector in charge of the police station near Dubey's village was arrested yesterday over allegations that he tipped off the gangster. It was surmised that Dubey had left UP when he was reportedly spotted at a hotel in Faridabad near Delhi on Wednesday morning.
