NEW DELHI: Vijay Diwas is observed every year on 16 December to commemorate the victory of Indian soldiers over the Pakistan Army in the Indo-Pakistan War 1971.
This win of India over Pakistan led to the formation of the country Bangladesh. India's strategies and diplomacies helped in its victory in the Bangladesh Liberation War in 1971.
On the day of Vijay Diwas, the nation pays tribute to the brave soldiers who fought for the victory of the country and the Indian Defense Army along with the three wings of the Indian Armed forces pay tribute at Amar Jawan Jyoti, India Gate, New Delhi. This year Vijay Diwas marks the 51st anniversary of India's victory over Pakistan.
The war between Pakistan and India on the eastern front formally came to an end when Pakistani forces surrendered unconditionally. In the fight for Bangladesh Liberation i.e. independence of East Pakistan (at present Bangladesh), India fought for 13 days starting from 3 December to 16 December 1971. The military aspects of the conflict called the Indo-Pakistan War 1971 came to an end with the surrender by Pakistan.
On 16 December 1971, the Commander of Pakistan Eastern Command, Lieutenant General Amir Abdullah Khan Niazi signed the 'instrument of surrender at Ramna Race Course in Decca at present Dhaka, Bangladesh.
The signed instrument of surrender was later accepted by the General Officer Commanding in Chief of India's Eastern Command, Lieutenant General Jagjit Singh Arora with his signature.
In the Indo-Pakistan War 1971, India lost a total of 3000 Indian armies and 12,000 got severely injured while Pakistan suffered more than 8000 deaths and 25, 000 people with injuries.
Bangladesh which was East Pakistan before, after the 1971 war it was brought into the world map as Bangladesh. The nation of Bangladesh was formed after the end of the Indo-Pakistan War 1971 between Indian and Pakistan and got independence after 23 years of British rule.
