WB CM Mamata Banerjee Holds 'Dharna' Against EC's Campaigning Ban, Resorts to Painting

Kolkata: West Bengal Chief Minister and TMC chief Mamata Banerjee staged a dharna in the heart of the city on Tuesday, 13 April 2021.

This came few minutes after the Election Commission ordered a blanket ban on her from campaigning in the state for the next 24 hours, she announced her decision to protest on the very next day.

Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee arrived at Mayo highway in Kolkata around 11:40 am and started her sit-in protest.

According to reports, the West Bengal chief minister was painting and was also showing the paintings as she sits on dharna at Gandhi Murti in Kolkata.

The Election Commission of India banned her from protesting starting from 8 pm on Monday till 8 pm on April 13 for her "highly insinuating and provocative remarks".

Nonetheless, Mamata Banerjee, still confined to a wheelchair owing to the injuries she sustained last month, started her sit-in protest subsequent to a Mahatma Gandhi statue at the venue.

As per reports, no other Trinamool leaders or supporters were seen nearby.

In a statement, a senior Trinamool Congress leader, said, "No party leaders are allowed near the site of the protest. She is sitting there alone."

The Election Commission prohibited Mamata Banerjee from campaigning for 24 hours from Monday 8 pm for her "unconstitutional' remarks against central forces.

The order was also issued because of a statement that had alleged religious overtones.

Lashing out at the Election Commission, Mamata Banerjee took to Twitter and declared that she would hold a protest against the poll panel's "unconstitutional and undemocratic" decision.

The Trinamool Congress boss was scheduled to address four rallies in the day, two in Nadia and two in North 24 Parganas.

In a report, a defense official in Kolkata stated that the area where Mamata Banerjee is staging a protest belongs to the army, and the Trinamool Congress was yet to receive permission for the programme.

It is worth mentioning that the last occasion Trinamool chairperson Mamata Banerjee sat on a dharna was on February 19 when the Central Bureau of Investigation came knocking at the doors of the then Kolkata Police Commissioner named Rajeev Kumar.
