Why build new Parliament building when half of India is hungry: Kamal Haasan to PM

New Delhi: Tamil actor and a politician, Kamal Haasan criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi about the central government's new project to build the new Parliament building. Haasan condemned the Centre's move at this point of time "when half of India is hungry" and the country is facing a pandemic.

Haasan lambasted on PM Modi heavily through a tweet on Twitter. He wrote, "Why a 1,000-crore new Parliament when half of India is hungry, losing livelihood due to coronavirus. When thousands died as the Great Wall of China was being built, the emperors said it was to protect people. To protect whom are you building the Rs 1,000-crore Parliament?" He has further urged PM Narendra Modi to answer to his question.

The foundation stone for the new Parliament building was laid on December 10. However, the construction has been suspended as of now after the Supreme Court of India blasted at Central government for moving forward with the project "aggressively" even before a decision is given on the petitions challenging it.

The new Parliament building, which is built at an estimated cost of Rs 971 crore will have an area of 64,500 square metres. The building will be earthquake resistant. 2,000 people will be directly involved, while 9,000 people will be indirectly involved in the construction of the building.

Haasan heads the political party Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) of Tamil Nadu. The party was launched in February 2018. Haasan is all set to start his elections campaign for the Tamil Nadu assembly polls 2021 on Sunday. The first phase of the election campaign is between December 13 to 16. He will cover Theni, Madurai, Dindigul, Virudhunagar, Tuticorin, Tirunelveli, and Kanyakumari districts. He also said that his party, MNM would seek the support of superstar Rajinikanth.
