Wrestlers' Protest Row: Delhi Court Asks Police For Update on FIRs Filed Against the WFI Chief

NEW DELHI: On Wednesday, a Delhi court asked the city police to provide an update on the FIRs that had been filed against Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, the president of the Wrestling Federation of India and a BJP member, on charges of sexual harassment.

The Delhi Police were given notice by Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Harjit Singh Jaspal in response to a request made by the wrestlers for the court to supervise the inquiry and record the statements of the claimed victims.

The police were instructed by the court to submit their report by May 12 in order for the matter to be heard again.

The women wrestlers had requested in their motion that the court order the creation of a status report on the inquiry into the situation. The application said that the police did nothing following the filing of FIRs on April 28.

"Police aren't prepared to look into anything. "Not even the victims' statements have been recorded by the police before the court," it alleged.

Additionally presented in court in a sealed cover were documents of the two FIRs filed against Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh. Under the POCSO Act, one FIR was filed for sexual harassment of a minor while another FIR was filed for sexual harassment of other complainants.

The female wrestlers had filed a complaint with the Supreme Court on the issue, which is how the FIRs came to be filed.

The lawyer stated that the statements were recorded three days after the FIRs were filed, despite the Supreme Court's directive that they be done so within 24 hours of filing an FIR.

He asserted that it had been reported that a sports ministry official had called the spouse of one of the victims and requested him to resolve the conflict. Another claim made by the attorney was that a state wrestling organization official had spoken with the victim's family and coach in an effort to resolve the issue.

"That person said that the girls have made a mistake. He said meet Neta ji, he will settle the matter," the counsel claimed.

The finest wrestlers in the nation, including Bajrang Punia, Sakshi Malik, and Vinesh Phogat, resumed their sit-in protest at Jantar Mantar on April 23, calling for the detention of the head of the Wrestling Federation of India.
