KENDRAPARA: In yet another case of domestic violence, a 24-year-old woman from Odisha was allegedly stripped naked and beaten up by her in-laws for dowry.

As per reports, the incident took place in Odisha's Kendrapara district, and the video of the incident has been widely shared on social media, a police officer said.

A probe has been ordered in this regard after the woman's uncle has filed a complaint with the local police station.

The inspector of Nikirai police station in the district, Kabuli Barik informed that the woman's statement has been recorded, however, her in-laws have fled the village.

Barik further stated that a special police team has been constituted to hunt down the offenders.

As per police officials, some locals in Koruk village had tried to intervene to rescue the woman, who was apparently tortured for not being able to fulfill dowry demands. Her family members, however, did not pay heed to any of their requests.

The menace of domestic violence has been alarming in the country. Despite several efforts, the country has seen a sharp rise in the cases of domestic violence especially during the lockdown that was imposed last year. Moreover, the trend continues to remain the same this year as per the National Commission for Women or NCW data.

During the lockdown when most people were confined to their homes, the number of complaints of domestic violence received by the NCW rosed sharply. The Commission received a total of 19,730 complaints of crimes against women in 2019 as compared to 23,722 in 2020, according to official data.

Meanwhile, a year after the lockdown, the NCW continues to receive over 2,000 complaints every month of crimes against women with nearly one-fourth of them related to domestic violence, it stated. As per the latest NCW data, 1,463 complaints of domestic violence against women were received from January 2021 to March 25, 2021.
