NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday paid tributes to the victims of 26/11 Mumbai Terror Attacks of 2008 while addressing an event in New Delhi.

The Prime Minister while terming the perpetrators behind the attack as enemies of humanity said that 14 years ago, they attacked Mumbai on a day when India was celebrating its Constitution and rights of citizens. He noted that the celebrations this year are more special as it is coinciding at a time when India is celebrating 'Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav' to commemorate 75 years of the nation's independence.

Prime Minister Modi gave these remarks while addressing the Constitution Day Celebrations at the Supreme Court. In his speech, PM Modi also paid tributes to the architect of the Indian Constitution Dr. BR Ambedkar and others who upholded their commitment to fulfill their vision for the nation.

The Prime Minister said, "Today is also the anniversary of the Mumbai terror attacks. 14 years back, when India was celebrating its Constitution and citizens rights, enemies of humanity carried out the biggest terror attack on India. I pay tribute to those who lost their lives in the attack."

It may be recalled here that on November 26, 2008, Pakistan based terrorist organisation Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) carried out the largest terror attack in independent India's history.

In the horrific attacks carried by 10 LeT terrorists, as many as 174 were killed and over 300 were injured. Apart from Indian nationals, 26 foreign nationals also died in the attacks 14 years ago.

The terrorists who were equipped with sophisticated weaponry including automatic weapons and hand grenades targeted civilians at several places in South Mumbai. Mumbai's iconic Chhatrapati Shivaji Railway station, the popular Leopold Cafe, two hospitals, and a theatre were among the places where the terrorists wreaked havoc.

Notably, most of the attacks ended within a few hours after they began at around 9.30pm on November 26, 2008. However, the terrorists took several people as hostages at the Nariman House where a Jewish centre was located, and at luxury hotels – Taj Mahal Palace and Tower and Oberoi Trident that ultimately ended on November 29.
