GANDHINAGAR: After the Delhi Police filed 185 cases and detained six people as they were bringing identical materials to Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) headquarters last week, eight people were detained on Friday in Ahmedabad in relation to "Modi Hatao, Desh Bachao" posters.

Arvind Kejriwal, the chief minister of Delhi and the national convenor of the AAP, compared the police activity there to censorship under British rule. The Gujarat Police said in a statement that the eight people were detained for putting up the posters without a permit.

The miscreants attempted to damage government property and posted obscene inscriptions on posters about Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The Press and Registration of Books Act's Section 12 (which states that every book or paper printed in India must clearly state the name of the printer and the place of printing) and the Delhi Prevention of Defacement of Property Act's Section 3 (which addresses defacing) were the legal grounds for the earlier registration of the cases involving the Delhi posters.

Within a short period of time, the six individuals detained in Delhi were released on bond. The arrests were a "direct assault on India's democratic framework," the AAP said in a statement condemning the conduct.

On Thursday, the AAP escalated its poster campaign against Modi. A week after the AAP started its "Modi Hatao, Desh Bachao" campaign, posters posing the question of whether the nation required an educated Prime Minister began to appear in various sections of Delhi on Thursday.

Gopal Rai, an AAP leader and a minister in Delhi, claimed that 22 states have comparable posters up in 11 different languages. He stated that, starting on April 10, the party would also display these posters in universities all over India.

Kejriwal Hatao, Delhi Bachao (remove Kejriwal, save Delhi) was the BJP's response to the poster campaign. They referred to Kejriwal as a "corrupt, dishonest tyrant."
