New Delhi: The tension over the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) spilled over to the Seelampur and Jafrabad area of Northeast Delhi on Tuesday. The violence over the Citizenship Amendment Act, which started from Jafrabad at around 2 p.m., spread to Welcome as well as Shastri Park areas too.
According to Delhi Police sources, the violence started when some miscreants attacked a school bus. They pelted stone at the bus and then started targeting the passers-by who abandoned their vehicles and ran away to save themselves.
The violent mob also pelted stones at the Northeast Delhi DCP office and set ablaze the vehicles in the parking lot of Jafrabad police station.
The Delhi Police was not ready for such violence. As soon as the police got to know about the violence in the area additional police forces and reserve police force was deployed at the spot. Several people including police personnel suffered injuries. The police couldn’t take the injured for treatment as the attackers were targeting the police and the passers-by.
The police had to lathicharge to control the situation but the crowd started pelting stones at the force.
Several metro stations have been closed after the violence. Delhi Metro Rail DCP Hemendra Singh told IANS, “Looking at the situation we have closed Shastri Park metro station.”
The Twitter account of the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation confirmed that several metro stations have been closed.
The sources said that the Delhi Police used a drone to know the actual situation so that they can be ready for any untoward incident. The usage of drones has not yet been confirmed by the Delhi Police but it was seen flying near the spots. (IANS)
