New Delhi: Ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Bangladesh, the Ministry of External Affairs Dr. S Jaishankar will travel to Dhaka on March 4 to finalise the date of PM Modi's visit.

As per reports, PM Modi is likely to visit Bangladesh on March 26 to grace the country's 50th Independence Day anniversary, which also marks the birth centenary of Bangladesh's Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

Jaishankar will hold discussions with his Bangladesh counterpart Foreign Minister AK Abdul Momen regarding the PM's visit to the neighbouring country.

Reportedly, both the Prime Ministers will hold a bilateral meeting to discuss various issues and several Memorandum of Understandings (MoUs) are expected to be signed.

Of late, there has been increased engagement between the two countries. Earlier in December, a virtual summit was held between PM Modi and Bangladesh PM Sheikh Hasina. During the meeting, Modi said that his government concentrated on keeping strong relations with neighbouring countries including Bangladesh since his government came into power.

The summit was held on December 17, a day after India celebrated its 50th anniversary of the nation's victory over Pakistan in the 1971 India-Pakistan War, also known as the Bangladesh Liberation War.

Hasina paid tributes to the members of the Indian armed forces martyred in the war and to their families. She expressed gratitude to the government and the people of India who extended their wholehearted support for the cause of our nation.

It needs to be mentioned here that during the Summit both the Prime Minister jointly inaugurated the Chilahati-Haldibari rail link between India and Bangladesh which has been inoperative for almost 55 years. They also inaugurated a digital exhibition on Mujibur Rahman and Mahatma Gandhi in an effort to celebrate the life and legacies of the iconic leaders.

Meanwhile, India sent two million doses of the Covid vaccine to the neighbouring country produced by the Serum Institute of India (SII).
