Ambedkar Jayanti is observed across the country on 14 April to commemorate the birth anniversary of Indian jurist and Dalit leader Dr. Babasaheb BR Ambedkar.

Dr. Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar was the main architect of the Indian constitution and also served the nation as a noted politician and economist.

This year on Thursday 14 April India celebrates the 131st birth anniversary of Dr. BR Ambedkar who is known as the Father of the Indian constitution.

Ambedkar Jayanti also called Bhim Jayanti is observed as a public holiday since the year 2015 in different parts of the country.

Apart from his profession as Minister of Law & Justice, Dr, Ambedkar was also an anthropologist, historian, and philosopher.

He has massive contribution in campaigning against the caste system in India and voiced for the lower caste people being their strength. He has earned a reputation for standing for the political and social rights of the Dalit community.

Dr. Ambedkar was born on 14 April 1891 in Madhya Pradesh in a Mahar community that was regarded as the untouchable in the Hindu religion. Later on 14 October 1956, Ambedkar converted to Buddhism and this was followed by 500,000 people inspired by him.

He completed his graduation and doctorates in law, political science and economics from the London School of Economics and Political Science in 1923.

Ambedkar was appointed as the Chairman of the Constitution Drafting Committee on 29 August 1947 and after a year he was appointed as the Indian Minister of Law.

Before converting to Buddhism, Ambedkar faced social and economic discrimination so being a person from the Mahar caste therefore he decided for conversion after a thorough study of the religion.
