Andhra Pradesh: 7 Dead and Several Injured During a Political Rally

NELLORE: As many as seven people including one woman have reportedly died during a stampede. The incident happened during a roadshow organised by the former chief minister of the state.

Crowds started to build up at the venue where the ex-Chief Minister was supposed to arrive. People gathered in large numbers to catch a glimpse of the political leader. As a result of the crowding, a cement slab gave way and many people fall into an open drainage canal, which led to the death of several people. Many more people were injured during the incident and were immediately rushed for medical attention.

A separate report mentioned that there was a scuffle among the people who were present for the meeting, and this was the main reason for the deaths and injuries.

Chandrababu Naidu immediately cancelled the meeting and announced a compensation of Rs 10 lakh for the families of each of the fatalities in the incident. He also promised to support the educational needs of their children. He also asked the members of his party to ensure proper medical care for all the injured.

Chandrababu Naidu, the current leader of the opposition in the state assembly of Andhra Pradesh was planning to address a gathering. The event at the Kandukur region of the state was a part of his ongoing campaign named 'why is our state facing this fate' ahead of the upcoming elections in the state. He is the head of the Telegu Desam Party and the state goes to the election in 2024.

The ongoing rallies by the ex-CM are mentioned to be an attempt to regroup and bring TDP to its former glory, which was removed from power by the Jagan Mohan Reddy-led YSR Congress in the legislative elections of 2019. His son Nara Lokesh is also taking an active part in the political campaign and aims to undertake a 4000 km long foot march in the coming year.
