In a statement released by the Indian Army, this incident was a case “purportedly seems to be of attempted suicide”. The statement also mentioned that the soldier in question had sustained a gunshot wound near the right temporal region of his head. It also added that the soldier was posted on sentry duty at the position with his service weapon and the service weapon along with the cartridge case of the fired round was found next to the soldier.
The soldier was immediately evacuated to the Military Hospital in the region, but he later succumbed to his injuries. According to reports, he had returned from his leave just one day before the incident, that is on April 11. The statement also mentioned, “There is NO connection whatsoever with the incident that took place at 04:30 AM at Bathinda Military Station.”
Previously, four Army soldiers in their mid-20s, were fired on at around 4:30 am on Wednesday in their barracks near the officers' mess in the artillery unit. A soldier had mentioned seeing two unidentified men in white kurta-pyjama, their faces and heads covered with cloth, coming out of the barracks after the firing with one of them holding an INSAS rifle.
Two Army officers went inside the barracks after the shooting and found Sagar Banne (25) and Yogesh Kumar J (24) in a pool of blood in one room and the bodies of Santosh M Nagaral (25) and Kamalesh R (24) in another. The bodies bore bullet marks according to the police report.
While the INSAS rifle was located by the search parties, the manhunt is still on for the two unknown attackers.
