NEW DELHI: In Krishnagiri, Tamil Nadu, DMK councillor Chinnasamy and nine of his supporters killed a 33-year-old Indian Army soldier. The soldier named Prabhakaran, and Chinnasamy got into a fight on February 8 over washing clothes at the water tank close to his residence, according to the police, who provided more details. Chinnasamy and nine other men are accused of attacking Prabhakaran and his brother Prabhu that night after the argument.
The Army soldier, who was seriously hurt in the incident, passed away from his wounds on Tuesday at a private hospital. Six males, including Rajapandi, Chinnasamy's son, were detained by the police after a case was filed on the basis of Prabhu's accusation. Police are now searching for Chinnasamy, who has been missing since the attack day, after the case was later reclassified from an assault to murder.
India's crime rate (crime incidence per 100,000 inhabitants), according to the National Crime Records Bureau, increased from 383.5 in 2018 to 385.5 in 2019 to 383.8 in 2020. The increase in crime in 2020 has been attributed to COVID-19-related restrictions and violations.
A total of 51.5 lacks (5.15 million) cognizable offenses—including 32.2 lakh IPC crimes and 19.4 lahks Special and Local Laws (SLL) crimes—were reported in the country in 2019. The number of occurrences reported increased by 1.6 percent annually in 2019, resulting in a rise in the crime rate per 100,000 persons from 383.5 in 2018 to 385.5 in 2019. (50.7 lahks). More than a fifth of all reported crimes—which included violent acts like murder, kidnapping, assault, and death by neglect—were violent crimes including murder, kidnapping, assault, and death by negligence (10.5 lahks).
