Assam: CM Accuses Congress of Echoing Pakistan and Taliban on Palestine Issue

GUWAHATI: In a recent political development, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has stirred controversy by alleging that the Indian National Congress's resolution supporting "Palestinian rights" bears striking similarities to the statements made by Pakistan and the Taliban. This accusation comes in the midst of a new round of conflict in the Israeli-Palestinian region.

Taking to social media, Chief Minister Sarma pointed out three key similarities between the Congress's resolution and those of Pakistan and the Taliban. He asserted that the Congress resolution does not condemn Hamas, refrains from deploring terror attacks on Israel, and remains silent on the issue of hostages, particularly women and children. Sarma further accused the Congress of prioritizing political appeasement over the nation's interests, claiming that such behavior is ingrained in the party's DNA.

In a post on X, Sarma said there are similarities in three aspects. Congress resolution “Do not condemn Hamas, Do not deplore terror attack on Israel and silent on hostages - women and children”.

The resolution, which was passed by the Congress Working Committee (CWC) on Monday, emphasizes the party's enduring support for the rights of the Palestinian people to land, self-government, and living with dignity and respect. It also calls for an immediate ceasefire between Israeli forces and Hamas terrorists. The statement from the Congress reads, "The CWC reiterates its long-standing support for the rights of the Palestinian people to land, self-government, and to live with dignity and respect. The CWC calls for an immediate ceasefire and for negotiations to begin on all outstanding issues, including the imperative issues that have given rise to the present conflict."

This assertion by Chief Minister Sarma was shared on his social media platform. It promptly sparked a political row, with the BJP targeting the Congress over its resolution. In response, the Congress pointed out that former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee had also adopted a similar stance on the issue.

Gaurav Gogoi, Congress's deputy leader in the Lok Sabha, emphasized, "After the success of the Bharat Jodo Yatra, the BJP is only talking about the Congress and has forgotten its own history as well as Vajpayeeji's speech." The Congress also dismissed reports of internal divisions within the party regarding the resolution concerning Hamas.

This controversy highlights the deep-rooted divisions and differences in India's political landscape when it comes to international issues such as the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. It underlines the complexity of diplomatic relations and the diverse perspectives held by Indian political parties on matters of global significance, with implications for both domestic and foreign policy.
