Ayodhya: All India Muslim Personal Law Board, Waqf Board Mull Review Plea

NEW DELHI/JAIPUR: Some Muslim bodies are contemplating filing a review petition against Saturday’’s Supreme Court verdict in the Ayodhya dispute that gives the disputed land to the Hindus for a temple and five acres of alternate land to the Muslims for a mosque. On the other hand, the Shahi Imam of Jama Masjid, Shahi Imam Ahmed Bukhari has welcomed the apex court judgment on the Ayodhya title suit and said he does not agree with the All India Muslim Personal Law Board which said it may file a review petition on the verdict. Ajmer Sharif Dargah Dewan Zainul Abedin, on Saturday, termed the Supreme Court verdict on Ayodhya a historic decision and said: “The verdict should be accepted and respected by all as this is nobody’s defeat or win but is the victory of the judiciary”. Speaking to media at Jaipur, Zainul Abedin, Ajmer Sharif Dargah Dewan on Saturday said, “We should accept the verdict of the Supreme Court. This is the victory of the judiciary and hence is no one else’s defeat or victory.” Whatever has happened, comes in the nation’s interest and hence we should now put an end to the dispute, he added.

Syed Zainul Abedin further said, “Let us all accept this decision and promote communal harmony and walk on the path of development and progress.” Meanwhile, extra security has been deployed at the Ajmer Shareef Dargah and vigil has also been enhanced. Section 144 has been imposed in the city to avert any untoward incident.

However, with more dissenting voices coming forward against the verdict, All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) Executive Member Kamal Farooqui said it was contemplating filing a review petition after studying the judgment. “This judgment is based on faith, not facts. The apex court used Article 142, which gives it special powers. We did not demand land for land. But you gave us five acres of land in exchange for 67 acres,” Farooqui said.

Sunni Waqf Board lawyer Zafaryab Jilani said: “We respect the judgment but we are not satisfied. The judgment is not as per our expectations.” “After today's order, it looks like we will file a review petition. But a final decision will be taken only after consultation with our legal team,” he added. “Today's observation by the Chief Justice of India will go a long way in the nation's welfare,” Jilani added.
