NEW DELHI: India's public service broadcaster, Doordarshan, celebrated its 62nd anniversary on Tuesday.

One of India's largest broadcasting organizations in studio and transmitter infrastructure, Doordarshan was established on 15 September 1959 by the Government of India, and is owned by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting.

Doordarshan operates over 46 studios and 21 television channels. It includes two all-India channels named DD National and DD News, 17 regional satellite channels, 11 state networks, an international channel named as DD India, a sports channel named as DD Sports, DD Bharati, DD Retro, DD Urdu and an agricultural channel, DD Kisan. However, on DD National, regional and local programs are carried on a time-sharing basis for terrestrial broadcasting only. Adding to it, DD News was launched on 3 November 2003 which broadcasted 24-hour news. These channels are relayed by all terrestrial transmitters in India. The regional-language satellite channels have two components involving a regional service for a particular state, and additional programs in the regional language available through cable operators and DTH operators. DD Sports broadcasts sporting events of national and international importance. It is the only sports channel that telecasts rural sports such as kho-kho and kabaddi. Indian television's longest-running program, Krishi Darshan debuted on Doordarshan on 26 January 1967.

To commemorate the occasion, Mayank Agrawal, Director General of Doordarshan & DD News tweeted to thank the viewers.

"62 years of the eventful journey... On Foundation Day, #Doordarshan thanks viewers for their love & continued support. Maintaining high ethical standards and reaching out to diverse populations through a bouquet of channels, are our prime objectives. We assure to live by that," wrote Agrawal.

On this occasion, people across India revisited their memories of the Doordarshan series and films that they used to love. The occasion filled Twitter with Doordarshan nostalgia.
