Patna: Two motorcyle-borne men unleashed a reign of terror by raining bullets on innocent people along NH-28 and NH-31 in Bihar's Begusarai on Tuesday evening.

One person was shot dead while several other people received bullet injuries in the incident and are undergoing treatment at Begusarai Sadar Hospital.

As reported by Begusai SP, Yogendra Kumar said that the deceased was identified as Chandan Kumar of Pipra village under the Barauni police station area. He was shot dead near Ayodhya Chowk under the Teghra police station area in the district.

The criminals kept on raining bullets for about 30km and escaped towards Samastipur. The injured included Ranjit Yadav of Mokama, Nitesh Kumar of Phulwaria, Amarjeet Kumar of Barauni, Nitish Kumar of Mansoorchak, Vishal Solanki of Barh and Mohan Raja of Maranchi.

Police are trying to identify the other people who have been injured in the firing. Police said the miscreants shot a fish seller and two of his customers at Malhipur Chowk, which falls in the jurisdiction of Chakia police station.

After the incident took place, checkpoints were set up across the district and police are conducting raids to arrest the miscreants.

Several political leaders condemned the firing incident. As reported, former deputy chief minister of Bihar Sushil Kumar was quoted as saying, "In Begusarai, two criminals on a motorcycle shot at and injured 9 people. This is a first-of-its-kind incident in the history of Bihar."

Union minister and MP from Begusarai Giriraj Singh said there is no government in Bihar and no fear of law among criminals. "The criminals fearlessly fired at several people and traveled 30 km across four police station areas, but they weren't caught by police... The Chief Minister should release a statement on this incident."

Blaming the 'jungle raj' in Bihar, Union minister Ashwini Choubey said, "The incident of open firing in Bihar's Begusarai and the shooting of 10 people is indicative of the deteriorating law and order situation in the state...Ever since the grand coalition government has come to Bihar, the spirits of criminals are high. There is panic in the public."
