NEW DELHI: On Sunday, June 4, a bridge that was still being built collapsed in Bhagalpur, Bihar. Two sections of the bridge were seen to collapse one after the other as the scene was captured on camera. There have not yet been any recorded casualties. At a cost of Rs 1,717 crore, the Aguwani Sultanganj Ganga bridge in Bihar's Khagaria was being built.
According to reports, the collapse happened about 6 o'clock. Nitish Kumar, the chief minister of Bihar, has called for an investigation into the tragedy and the designation of individuals accountable for the fall. The 'Pul Nirman Nigam' has been asked to submit a report.
Reports state that at least a 3 foot section of the bridge fell into the Ganga River below. In April 2022, a storm had also caused some damage to the bridge.
On the Ganges between Khagaria, Aguwani, and Sultanganj, the bridge's middle section was being built. Two years prior, a section of the bridge had also collapsed.
However, in response to the bridge collapse, the Bhartiya Janata Party attacked Nitish Kumar, the chief minister of Bihar. Amit Malviya, a BJP politician, questioned whether Nitish Kumar and Tejashwi Yadav would step down as chief minister and deputy chief minister, respectively.
In the Begusarai area, a bridge split in half and plunged into the Burhi Gandak river in December. Since there was no access road, the bridge had not yet been publicly opened to the public. No one was hurt in the incident. An official stated at the time of the tragedy last year, "It was to be inaugurated soon, but it collapsed before that."
In the month prior, in November, a bridge that was still under construction in the Nalanda district of CM Nitish Kumar collapsed, killing one labourer and injuring another. Before they were inaugurated, under-construction bridges in the districts of Kishanganj and Saharsa also fell.
