BJP Announces its Candidates for Upcoming Bypolls

NEW DELHI: The Bharatiya Janata Party has announced the names of its candidates to contest in the upcoming byelections in the states of Arunachal Pradesh and West Bengal.

The Election Commission of India announced in the month of January that the byelections for six constituencies spread across five states will be organised on February 27. These will be held in one constituency each of Tamil Nadu, Jharkhand, Arunachal Pradesh and West Bengal as well as two constituencies of Maharastra. The counting of votes for these constituencies will be carried out on March 2.

Central Election Committee of the Bharatiya Janata Party announced the names of their candidates to compete in Arunachal Pradesh and West Bengal on Wednesday. While Tsering Lhamu will contest in the Lumla (reserved for Scheduled Tribe) seat in Arunachal Pradesh, Dilip Saha will compete for the Sagardighi constituency in West Bengal for the Bharatiya Janata Party.

The bypolls in Arunachal are a result of the death of BJP politician Jambey Tashi and in West Bengal because of the death of Trinamool Congress member Subrata Saha. The death of Congress leader Thiru E Thirumahan Everaa leads to bypolls in Tamil Nadu's Erode- East constituency.

Kasba Peth and Chinchwad constituencies of Maharastra also go for re-election on the same day because of the death of Mukta Shailesh Tilak and Laxman Pandurang Jagtap. Both of them belonged to the Bharatiya Janata Party. Apart from these, the Ramgarh constituency of Jharkhand goes to election again because of the disqualification of Mamta Devi belonging to the Congress party.

The last day for filing nominations for all these constituencies was notified as February 7 and document verifications begin on the next day. February 10 is the last day for anyone who wishes to withdraw their candidature.

These dates also coincide with the polling dates for the upcoming assembly polls in the states of Meghalaya and Nagaland.
