Chandigarh: The Congress-led government of Punjab has appointed Charanjit Singh Channi as the new Chief Minister of Punjab. Following the resignation of the former Chief Minister, Captain Amarinder Singh, just few months after the assembly elections, the party announced the appointment of the new chief minister after a meeting with the legislators.
Charanjit Singh Channi has also become the first Dalit Chief Minister of Punjab. Previously, he had taken charge as the Technical Education Minister of Punjab. He is currently 58 years old.
Punjab CM Channi had also won the MLA seat 3 times from Chamkaur Sahib constituency.
Punjab Congress in-charge Harish Rawat expressed his happiness on Twitter and wrote, "It gives me immense pleasure to announce that Charanjit Singh Channi has been unanimously elected as the leader of the Congress Legislature Party of Punjab."
Former Chief Minister Amarinder Singh had resigned after a section of the Punjab Congress MLAs put pressure on the party demanding a change in the state leadership. This section of MLAs also included Charanjit Singh Channi.
Charanjit Singh Channi was also the leader of opposition in the Punjab assembly from 2015 to 2016. He joined the ministry as a Punjab Cabinet Minister in 2017.
Channi also has a #MeToo case pending against him after an IAS officer alleged that he had sent her inappropriate text messages. However, a case in matter was never filed and was declared "resolved" by the former Chief Minister.
