NEW DELHI: Following the disqualification of Wayanad MP after he was found guilty by a Surat Court in a defamation case, the Congress Party on Friday planned a statewide uprising.
The Congressman was stripped of his Lok Sabha membership just one day after his conviction, setting off a political brawl in which multiple political parties criticised the Modi-led BJP government for its repression of the opposition.
Many political groups were observed denouncing the Union administration for gagging the voice of the opposition, starting from Arvind Kejriwal of the AAP to Mamata Banerjee of the TMC.
Later that evening, the Congress party convened a crucial meeting, which was attended by senior leaders P Chidambaram, Anand Sharma, Ambika Soni, Mukul Wasnik, Salman Khurshid, and Pawan Kumar Bansal, as well as party president Mallikarjun Kharge, general secretaries Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, K C Venugopal, Jairam Ramesh, Rajiv Shukla, and Tariq Anwar.
In the meeting, the Congress party resolved to launch a national protest against Rahul Gandhi's eligibility.
Ramesh, the general secretary of the Congress, declared: "We will travel throughout the nation because Rahul Gandhi was purposefully removed from the race because he spoke out against the Modi administration on the Adani issue, the government's foreign policy, and the green light given to China for incursions at the border."
The opposition parties' support was likewise welcomed by the party. He said it was reported today that numerous opposition parties had denounced the swift, unilateral step taken to remove Rahul Gandhi from office.
Many party officials criticised the Modi-led BJP and labelled the former Congress president's disqualification as a Lok Sabha member as "anti-democratic" as soon as it happened.
Speaking to the media, Congress leader Abhishek Manushinghvi remarked that the action amounted to strangulating the democracy. This kind of plot to silence Rahul Gandhi was initiated the day he questioned Prime Minister Adani.
It's a blatant example of the BJP government's anti-democratic, autocratic mindset, claimed Congress MP KC Venugopal.
