Delhi: In order to thwart the scarcity of essential food articles in the country including the North-east during the on-going nationwide lockdown, the Indian Railways has been transporting sufficient quantities of food articles and other goods since March 23. Informing this in a press release the Ministry of Railways has said, “Indian Railways has transported 6.75lakh wagons of goods including 4.5 lakh wagons of essential commodities like food grains, salt, sugar, edible oil, coal and petroleum products since March 23.” The release further added that the Indian Railways continues to deliver essential commodities through its freight services during the nationwide lockdown to strengthen the Government’s efforts in managing the challenge and adverse impact of COVID-19 in the country”. “The Union Government has been focussing special attention to ensure that the supply chains of essential goods are maintained, besides ensuring that farm produce is transported without hindrance within the state and inter-state,” the release added. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had announced a 21-day-lock complete lockdown till April 14 to contain the spread of dreaded novel coronavirus, on March 24.
