Cyclone Asani: IMD Predicts Heavy Rainfall And Strong Winds In Andaman And Nicobar

NEW DELHI: The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) in a recent update informed that Cyclone Asani will be seen around the Bay of Bengal during the evening hours on Monday 21 March and it would further move northwards and east of Andaman and Nicobar Island.

According to the IMD predictions, the deep depression over the north Andaman Sea and its adjoining area is expected to get more intensified into a cyclonic storm on Monday.

The Andaman and Nicobar Islands under the influence of intensified depression are likely to see very heavy rains and strong winds by Wednesday 23 March.

IMD senior scientist RK Jenamani said that strong wind and heavy rain in moving towards the Myanmar coast and this system will become a marginal cyclone by tonight.

The Ministry of Earth Sciences of the Indian Government, IMD has given a strong warning for all the sea areas that include the east-central Bay of Bengal and the Andaman Sea.

The storm is likely to cross Thandwe in the Myanmar coast by the initial hours of Wednesday 23 March.

The cyclone update of IMD issued at 08:45 am on Monday stated that during the next 48 hours the cyclone will move nearly northwards along and off the Andaman Islands towards the Myanmar coast.

According to the update, by Monday evening, wind speeds will pick up and remain in the range between 65 to 75 kilometres per hour gusting 85 kilometres per hour near the Andaman & Nicobar island and the east-central Bay of Bengal till Tuesday 22 March.

According to the IMD forecast, on Monday heavy to very heavy rainfall ranging from 64.4 mm to 204.4 mm in 24 hours is expected over the north Andaman Islands. Moderate rainfall is also likely over the Nicobar Islands by late hours today.

Meanwhile, to ensure safety ahead of the massive storm the NDRF (National Disaster Response Force) teams are getting prepared with the necessary measure by cutting trees and branches that can cause harm.
