New Delhi: India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Sunday warned that the cyclonic storm, Asani, is expected to further intensify in the next 24 hours.
On Saturday, the weather forecasting agency had also predicted that a depression has formed over the southeast Bay of Bengal about 170 km west of Car Nicobar and is likely to intensify into a cyclonic storm by May 8.
''Deep Depression over intensified into a cyclonic storm 'Asani' about380 km west of Port Blair (Andaman Islands).To move northwestwards and intensify further into a Severe Cyclonic Storm over east central Bay of Bengal during next 24 hours,'' IMD tweeted.
Meteorological Department scientist Mrityunjay Mohapatra said that the cyclone is now moving towards the coast in the northwest direction. It will continue to move in that direction till the evening of May 10 and thereafter move north-eastwards.
''Then it will move forward parallel to the coast. The sea condition will remain rough along the Odisha coast on May 9 and 10 and the sea wind will increase to 80-90 kmph,'' he added.
It has been told in the bulletin of the Meteorological Department that on May 10, there will be light to moderate rain in the coastal areas of Odisha. There will be heavy rain at one or two places in Gajapati, Ganjan and Purmi.
At the same time, fishermen have been advised not to go into the deep sea between 9-11 May.
Meanwhile, the effect of this cyclone will also be seen in other states like Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, Bengal, Bihar, and Assam.
