NEW DELHI: Cyclone Mocha is expected to move towards Bangladesh and Myanmar, according to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD). On the other side, the IMD has issued a warning that a low-pressure system has formed over the Southeast Bay of Bengal and the adjoining South Andaman Sea, which might lead to depression in a few areas and, later, Cyclone Mocha on May 10.

Meanwhile, local authorities have imposed preventative measures prohibiting offshore activism, fishing, and warning seafaring boats operating in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands from May 8 to 12.

The ‘Mocha’ was taken as a suggestion from Yemen after the Red Sea port city.

According to IMD Director General Mrutyunjay Mohapatra, "The cyclonic storm will move north-northwest to the central Bay of Bengal until May 11 and then re-curve and move north-northeast to the Bangladesh-Myanmar coast."

According to IMD statement, “The weather service also projected severe rain over the Andaman and Nicobar Islands on May 9, as well as heavy rain in isolated areas from May 10-11. On May 9, squally winds of 50-60 kph with gusts up to 70 kph are expected across the southeast Bay of Bengal, Andaman & Nicobar Islands, and surrounding Andaman Sea.”

Furthermore, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has stated that the state administration has taken all required safeguards and that Cyclone Mocha will not make landfall in the state.

"There is no need to be concerned about Cyclone Mocha... It is possible that it will not make landfall in West Bengal. However, residents in the state's coastal districts have been advised to exercise caution. As a precaution, alerts were issued in the Sunderbans and Digha on May 10 and 11. “ Mamata Banerjee further said.

Rainfall will be scattered to moderately widespread throughout Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, and Meghalaya over the next three days.

In the next four days Kerala, Mahe, and South Interior Karnataka might witness Thunderstorms/lightning/gusty winds expected with light/moderate scattered to fairly widespread rainfall. During the next two days, solitary light will distribute rainfall over the rest of the region.
