Cyclone Yaas: Cyclonic Storms Expected in Parts of India, Rainfall in Assam & Meghalaya

From the evening of May 25, most areas of Assam and Meghalaya are expected to experience heavy rainfall, with heavy falls in isolated areas, according to the weather service.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the depression over east central Bay of Bengal has intensified into a deep depression approximately 600 km north-northwest of Port Blair, and it will deepen into a Cyclonic Storm by this morning (24th May) and further deepen into a very severe cyclonic storm during the next 24 hours.

"Depression over east central Bay of Bengal intensified into a Deep Depression and about 600 km north-northwest of Port Blair. To intensify into a Cyclonic Storm by 24th May morning and further into a Very Severe Cyclonic Storm during the subsequent 24 hours," stated the weather department today in the morning. 

The department said on Sunday that the low pressure area that had become well-defined over east central Bay of Bengal earlier in the evening had condensed into a depression over east central Bay of Bengal, and that it was very likely to move north-northwestwards and intensify into a Cyclonic Storm by the morning of May 24th. During the next 24 hours, the storm will intensify into a strong cyclonic storm.

By the morning of May 26th, the storm would be moving north-northwestwards, intensifying more, and reaching the northwest Bay of Bengal along the shores of West Bengal and north Odisha.  "It is very likely to cross north Odisha - West Bengal between Paradip and Sagar islands by evening of 26th May as a Very Severe Cyclonic Storm," the IMD said. 

For the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Odisha, West Bengal, and Sikkim, a rain alert has been issued. The IMD has forecast mild to moderate rainfall across the Andaman and Nicobar Islands on Monday, with heavy to very severe precipitation in isolated areas. 

On the 25th, Odisha is expected to receive mild to moderate rainfall in several areas, with heavy to very heavy rainfall in isolated areas in the north coastal districts.  "Heavy to very heavy rains at a few places with extremely heavy falls in Balasore, Bhadrak, Kendrapara, Mayurbhanj and heavy to very heavy falls at a few places in the districts of North Odisha namely Jagatsinghpur, Cuttack, Jajpur and Keonjhar on 26th May," it said.

Meanwhile, from the evening of May 25, most areas of Assam and Meghalaya are expected to experience heavy rainfall, with heavy falls in isolated areas, according to the weather service.
