NEW DELHI:

Dearness Allowances (DA) and Dearness Relief (DR) for Union Government employees and retired employees, respectively, may be increased after a one-year hiatus.

The DA of Central government workers has not been increased in over a year since the Narendra Modi government chose to postpone the raise owing to interruptions in the country's economic processes caused by the new coronavirus-induced lockdown.

The Centre is set to convene a meeting today to discuss the pending Dearness Allowance (DA) and Dearness Relief (DR) arrears and Dearness Relief (DR) for about 52 lakh central government employees and 60 lakh central government pensioners who are expecting a pay increase.

The decision to raise the DA and DR is meant to be announced at the meeting. If this transpires, Union government employees and retirees may get a DA and DR raise beginning in January 2020. The pending DA and DR may be released in three parts by the government. If such a raise is included, it is probable that the DA for Union government employees will increase from 17 percent to 30 percent.

During the meeting, officials from the Union Ministry of Finance, the National Council of Joint Consultative Machinery (JCM), and the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) are scheduled to make a final decision on the DA arrears recommended by the 7th Pay Commission.

"Official meeting between the officials of the Department of Expenditure at the Ministry of Finance, Department of Personnel & Training (DoPT) and the representatives of JCM is going to take place on 26th June. The scheduled meeting will be chaired by the cabinet secretary of India," informed Shiva Gopal Mishra, Secretary — Staff Side at the National Council of JCM.

"The meeting will revolve around the 7th CPC DA and 7th CPC DR benefits of the central government employees and central government pensioners. In this meeting we will discuss about the DA arrears and DR arrears payment due for 1.1.2020, 1.7.2020 and 1.1.2021 to the central government servants and central government pensioners respectively," stated Shiva Gopal Mishra when asked about the agenda of the meeting.
